Mount Hope Cemetery
Everybody is buried here, from Alonzo Horton to the poorest of the poor (who qualify under the County's Indigent Burial Program). You can spend days wandering around the attractive slopes, searching for your ancestors or the notable. It's worth the wander: Founding Father Horton, whose committee created this municipal cemetery in 1871, finally settled here in 1909, at the ripe old age of 96. He was followed by Elisha Babcock, who built the Hotel Del Coronado; Kate Morgan, the "ghost" who still haunts the Del; Kate Sessions, who planted San Diego; Alta M. Hulett, America's first female attorney; writer Raymond Chandler, creator of detective Philip Marlow, for his own Big Sleep; and Seaman Recruit Likiba Nicole Palmer, who died aboard the USS Cole.
