South Park’s self-described “decadent vegan” bar and restaurant serves cocktails and meatless cuisine in a unique designer space. White marble and pink-patterned wallpaper reflect off a gilded grid of a mirrored ceiling that bends at the north end into a wall where a massive sculpture depicts a four-eyed wolf wearing a human skull for a crown with snakes curling off the side of its head like ram horns. Okay, the latter’s a bit jarring, especially if you’re seated in the booth immediately beneath it. But it does pair well with the death-metal soundtrack playing at a (usually) low volume on overhead speakers.
The beer-battered palm tacos Kindred debuted in 2017 capture the joy of fried fish on a corn tortilla, without the fish. A blend of pureed heart of palm and potato gives these crispy tacos their creamy centers, surrounded by a seasoned batter crunch made light and fluffy with the help of a big pale lager. Twelve bucks include two tacos with jicama salsa for texture, arbol chili crema for heat, and seaweed salad for that essence of ocean.
