Deer Park Monastery
Escondido’s Deer Park Monastery is a 400-acre center for monastic training and mindfulness practice that sits nestled in the chaparral mountains. The site was founded by Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, a Zen master, peace activist, and author known as The Father of Mindfulness whose “Engaged Buddhism” movement blends mindfulness with social action. In the 60s and 70s, he introduced mindfulness to the West as a way of living happily in the present moment. Although he passed away in 2022, he is remembered for his teachings on "interbeing," which posits that all things are connected.
Most Sundays, the Monastery opens up its gates for visitors to explore the grounds and have a chance to participate in the day’s practices of “sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful eating, deep relaxation meditation, and sharing togetherness.” The day’s program starts with a guided meditation walk which sets the peaceful tone. Afterwards, a Dharma Talk is held in the Meditation Hall followed by small group teachings or discussions and a silent lunch. There is a children’s program for ages 6 to 12. Free to visit, but donations are encouraged.
