La Casita
1247 C Street, San Diego, CA 92101
Sergio Haro took over this place in the summer of 2013. He feeds a lot of City College students and professors. But only now has he thought of what to really do with his patio: Grow organic food.
Vibe: Mellow Mexican café with a breezy patio
Fare: Family-style Mexican with robust vegetarian offerings. Inexpensive.
Seating: 4 booths inside; 12 tables on the patio
Must Try: Chiles rellenos; chilaquiles; chicken sopes. Some of the best chorizo con huevos (spicy pork sausage with eggs) in town. Most delicious is watching Anglo city-hallers trying to love the house-made menudo (tripe soup).

In high school, this girl named Barb Navarro was in my journalism class. Her dad owned the restaurant and I went and tried it. That was 23 years ago, and I loved it.
Haven't been there since, even though I saw Barb at our high school reunion.
It's just a tiny Mexican place on a corner, so you don't go for the atmosphere.
