Live version of album is an attempt to give back

“The gig came about as a result of my headline show at the Belly Up, thanks to [promoter] Tim Pyles. We must have done something correctly, as they called us back to open for David Cook,” says singer-songwriter Matthew Phillips, explaining how he came to open for the winner of American Idol’s seventh season in October 2025. “It was an acoustic show, and it really is the only time I’ve ever said yes to an acoustic gig. My favorite part of that show was how attentive and kind his audience was. His team was gracious to me and he even said ‘Make some noise for Matthew Phillips’ during his set. That truly meant the world to me. We had a listening audience that evening, and every single person was present and in the moment with us.”

Phillips’ music is a blend of pop, alternative, and rock, featuring electronic textures and hook-filled songwriting. Among the influences he cites are Eric Clapton, Prince, Coldplay, Awolnation, and Foster the People. He released his debut single "So In Love” in July 2023, also produced as a music video, followed in November by “Till It’s Over,” which came with a concert video filmed live at downtown's House of Blues that went somewhat viral, capturing a powerful audience moment and earning nearly 30,000 Youtube views. “‘Till It’s Over’ is about taking a stand and saying enough is enough, sticking up for yourself, and walking away,” says Phillips of the track, which is typified by lyrics like I’m a shattered heart, I’m a shattered soul, it’s not over till it’s over, but it’s time, time to get over you.

He won Best Pop Artist at the San Diego Music Awards in both 2024 and 2025, performing onstage at Humphreys at the latter induction ceremony. “The singles helped take me from playing open mics to headlining the House of Blues [for] LiveNation, the Belly Up, the Del Mar Fair, and even performing at the SDMAs at Humphreys.” A video for “Time Fades Love” was filmed live at the Belly Up

By the end of 2025, his debut album Till It's Over had garnered 138,000 Spotify streams, with around 15,700 Monthly listeners. His Spotify account has over 817,000 views, with "Till It's Over" accounting for 574,000 of them. The success of the album and singles also helped Phillips score endorsement deals with Fender Electric, Ernie Ball, Seymour Duncan, and locally-based Taylor Acoustic.

The August 9, 2025 release party in San Marcos for Till It's Over was recorded and released under the title Matthew PhillipsTill It’s Over (Live at The Bornemann Theatre) on all streaming platforms on October 15, the same day he opened for David Cook at the Belly Up.

“When searching for the perfect place to release this album, The Bornemann was everything I could have asked for,” he says of the theater, part of TERI Campus Of Life with its mission of providing special needs individuals with a lifetime of learning, independence, and enrichment by hosting events that raise money and awareness for local programs. “Music, community, and a meaningful cause. I wanted to give back to this incredible place, so a portion of the proceeds from this release will be donated to the campus. My hope is to raise awareness and support for this remarkable mission.”

“The Bornemann stands as a tribute to creativity, inclusion, and the boundless potential within every heart. Dedicated with heartfelt appreciation by the Bornemann Family in honor of their son William, this transformative space celebrates the unique talents of all who grace its stage. Here, artistry meets inclusivity, and every show becomes a celebration of human expression.”
