There is so rarely a good answer to the question why something is cool. Things that are cool are cool, end of story. If you have to ask why, or even whether, then you probably wouldn’t understand.
But that didn’t stop us from asking the cool kids at SOMA why Beach Bunny was cool when they came to town on August 6. And once we had our answer, we put them on the spot and asked them to name a specific lyric that they loved. (There was no need to comment on the sound: lead singer/guitarist Lili Trifilio sounded exactly like she does on her recordings, a neat trick that not every artist can manage. There might be some need to comment on her defiantly sparkly pink guitar and her emphatic kicks.)
Benji: “I really like their vibe. I feel like they’re a Midwest band. When I heard ‘Ms. California,’ it transported me out here — like, ‘everything’s perfect in California.’ But I’m in California now, and I’m like, ‘Honestly? I feel it myself.’”
Lyric, from “Entropy”: Running away through the rain makes your socks wet/Splitting your heart and your brain makes you feel uncertain.
Erin: “I really like her voice. It’s just incredibly approachable. She sings in a really comfortable register that’s easy to reach, so you can yell-sing along with her.”
Lyric: No favorite, but she likes “Tunnel Vision.” “I like all the harsh breaks and pauses. It’s not smooth; there’s a lot of staccato in there.”
Janet: “There’s relatability and sadness in her lyrics, but the music has such an upbeat tempo. It’s not the kind of music you listen to when you are sad that just brings you deeper into your sadness. Instead, it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, I can scream along to this.’ It makes me feel a lot of emotions, but not more sadness.
Lyric, from “Clueless”: I insisted that the faces of my parents couldn’t change/ But I love how I look like my mama when she was my age. “I think it’s beautiful to have that kind of relationship with your mom. I’m always told that I look like my mom when she was my age, and that is one of the biggest compliments I can imagine, because I love my mom. I resonate with that lyric, and I think it’s beautiful that Beach Bunny gets to have the same experience that I have.”
Rachel: “Beach Bunny is cool because they are awesome and wholesome, and they have great energy. Also — and I will get points for this — my little sister, who is a little cooler than I am, introduced me to Beach Bunny.
Lyric: “I love ‘Sports.’” Unfortunately, Rachel’s memory was a bit impaired when we spoke. Sample lyric: I’m tired of waitin’, I was never good at sports/ Save the games for the girls on the tennis court.
Julia: “She has a beachy punk feel that I really enjoy.”
Lyric, from “April”: I’m not overthinking but I think about you a lot/ And lately I am just an afterthought.
