Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill was only 13 years old in the late 1980s when she joined the group that would evolve into The Fugees, whose hitmaking streak kicked in after signing to Ruffhouse Records in 1993. During her tenure with the group as a rapper and lead vocalist, their full-length The Score became one of the best-selling rap albums of all time. Now recognized for blending raw soul vocals with poetic rapping and socially conscious, self-empowering lyrics, she made her mark on the music world as a solo artist with the release of her now-iconic 1998 full-length The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. That record swept multiple Grammy Awards at the 1999 ceremony including Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. She was the first woman to win five or more Grammy Awards in one night, and the album was the first hip-hop record to win a Grammy for Album of the Year. She was also the first rapper to be featured on the cover of Time magazine, and her collaborators have included Carlos Santana and Whitney Houston. Her current tour is part of a return-to-the-spotlight that includes a recent Grammy Awards performance (her first since 1999) and a surprise Los Angeles performance earlier this month at a Kanye West concert.

Lucía
When: May 1
Where: JAI at the Conrad
Veracruz-born jazz singer Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso, AKA Lucía, began performing at age two in her parents' son jarocho band, later studying voice at the Universidad Veracruzana. Early in her career as a professional singer, she became the first Mexican finalist at the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. The 24 year-old is known for fusing traditional American jazz with Mexican son jarocho and Latin pop, as well as for collaborations with artists like Natalia Lafourcade, with whom she performed on stage as a backup singer for two years. Her own tours have taken across Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. with performances at noted venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Her debut album, produced by Grammy-winner Matt Pierson, was released last year and features lyrics sung in both English and Spanish. Making her San Diego debut with two La Jolla performances (5:30 pm and 8 pm), Lucía will present jazz standards and Latin American classics, showcasing her scat singing and her ability to merge foundational jazz music with Spanish-language boleros.

Moonchild
Fronted by multi-instrumentalist and singer Amber Navran and co-founded in 2011 by fellow alumni of the Jazz Studies program at USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, neo-soul trio Moonchild is known for blending elements of jazz, R&B, and electronic music. On the release of their debut album Be Free in 2012, they earned the attention and endorsement of Stevie Wonder, who invited the band to open for him at that year’s annual House Full Of Toys benefit concert. Their Voyager LP was named among Bandcamp’s Top 100 Albums of 2017, and a 2019 release called Little Ghost hit number six on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album chart. Their Starfruit full-length was nominated for a 2023 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album, further widening their fan base and bringing them to the attention of mainstream media. They’re touring in support of their sixth full-length Waves, released in February and featuring collaborations with Jill Scott and Lalah Hathaway.
