Local brews and booze join in at Del Mar Wine + Food Festival

Big-name chefs and athletes add to the appeal

“Every wine, beer, and spirit we feature at the festival is handpicked by our team of experts,"  said Chris Finn, CEO if Del Mar Wine + Food Festival. "We look for makers who aren’t just producing great beverages, but who are telling a story — whether that’s a San Diego craft brewer pushing innovation, or a winemaker with deep regional roots. It’s about showcasing quality, diversity, and the personalities behind the glass. We want guests to experience the full spectrum — rare, boutique wines and craft cocktails alongside outstanding wineries the region is famous for. It’s about curating a lineup that excites both seasoned enthusiasts and people just starting their journey.”

The third annual Del Mar Food + Wine Festival was held September 10-14 at various locations, culminating in the Grand Tasting, which was held at Surf Sports Park on the 13th and 14th. The all-you-can-eat-and-drink tasting featured an assortment of Temecula wineries, including Wilson Creek, Oak Mountain, and Callaway, alongside Northern California wines from the likes of Three Sticks and Rombauer Vineyards. Other local beverages were also on hand, including AleSmith’s Sun Path Peach, a 4.0% ABV easy-sipping lager brewed with real fruit to go down easily in the middle of a wine tasting. Mujeres Brew House offered similar light offerings, including micheladas and an effervescent pineapple seltzer. Local spirits company Fierce & Kind had both their bourbon and cask-strength bourbon available for tasters, as well as a cocktail made with their American vodka.

The celebration of local culture went even further, with offerings from and participation by some of the county’s most famous athletes. Alex Morgan hosted a dinner at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar while her Volley Tequila Soda was on-hand to taste in grapefruit, ginger mango and lime flavors. Tequila was a theme for local athletes, as Rob Machado’s Solento Organic Tequila was also part of the tasting.

Of course, there was also the food. Crafty attendees could pair their red wines with steak slices, their Pinot Grigio with fish, and their beer with tacos or burgers. Big name local chefs like Brian Malarkey, Eric Bost, Drew Deckman, and Aiden Owens were on hand to offer dishes that would provide a solid base for all the beverages consumed. The San Diego smorgasbord also featured local sports teams San Diego FC, San Diego Wave, San Diego Legion, and San Diego Mojo, along with local businesses ranging from wellness businesses like StretchLab to clothing companies like Hemlock Hat Co.

“San Diego is a community-driven city," said Finn, "and having local athletes, chefs, and media personalities take part really made the festival feel like a celebration of our town. Their involvement added energy, drew people together, and highlighted how food and wine connect across culture, sport, and entertainment. Bringing local celebrities into the mix made the festival unique to San Diego. It’s not just another food and wine event — it’s our community on stage, showing pride in what we grow, brew, and create here.”
