This year's World Beer Cup didn't award any gold medals San Diego breweries, but neither were the locals skunked. “The overall results aren’t what we’re used to," noted Brewers Guild Executive Director Erik Fowler, "but that doesn’t take away from the extraordinary beers that did win medals this year. Some categories had more than 100 entries, and a few even had more than 200. The World Beer Cup is highly competitive year in and year out, and San Diego will keep bringing its best — year in and year out.”
In total, San Diego breweries brought home seven medals: three silver and four bronze (with nearby Tijuana’s Insurgente also taking home a bronze). The biggest local winner was Pizza Port Brewing, which came home with two silver medals and one bronze.
Pizza Port Imperial Beach earned silver in the German-Style Schwarzbier category for its Schwarzbier, a 4.4% ABV Dark German Lager made with 10% dark German malts. Although the lager is light-bodied and has only a slight bitterness, it features a roasty, complex flavor profile with notes of chocolate and coffee. IB Head Brewer, Tom Finney attributes its distinct character to his use of Czech hops rather than the typical German varieties.

Pizza Port’s other silver medal winner was Oscar Wanted a Brown Ale which won in the English-Style Brown Ale category. The 5% ABV English Brown Ale strongly features caramel and coffee flavors. Solana Beach Head Brewer Mike Havens adds, “There are subtle notes of chocolate as well to balance it out. And oats were used to help give the beer a little more body and smoothness.”

Pizza Port OB won bronze in the South German-Style Dunkelweizen category for Junk in Da Trunkel Dunkel, a 5% Dunkelweizen. The malt-forward, rich, caramel-colored ale features fruity notes of banana and clove derived from the yeast. Additionally, Pizza Port OB Head Brewer Matt Palmer notes, “We use a blend of traditional German yeast strains that we believe provide enough interesting flavors without taking away from the smooth malt character.”
Aside from Pizza Port, four other San Diego breweries took home medals. Craft Coast Beer & Tacos won silver in the Australia-Style Pale Ale category for its XPA. Coronado Brewing Company’s Guava Hard Cider won bronze in the Fruited Cider category, North Park Beer Company’s House of Fu! Won bronze in the Imperial IPA category, and Tap Room Beer Company’s Modern Love won bronze in the New Zealand-Style IPA category.
The World Beer Cup has been held since 1996 and features judges drawn from a list of internationally recognized brewers, consultants, industry suppliers, and writers. Judging is blind, with no brand knowledge of any kind provided to judges. This year’s seven total medals was half of the 14 medals local breweries won last year — a total that included four gold medals. As Fowler explained however, this is likely due to the large quantity of submissions this year, and not any drop-off in quality of brews made here in San Diego.
