San Diego Reader: What’s your favorite subject on which to preach?
Pastor Robert Herber: Friendship with Jesus, knowing Jesus as a friend. When I went to college, I had a lot of things that the world would say you would want — a nice car, nice clothes. I came from a more affluent family. But I was still empty inside and insecure. I met a college student who just shined with love and overflowed with joy. That student didn’t have all the things going for him that we would think we’d need to be happy. I asked him why he was like this, and he told me it’s from having a friendship with Jesus, hearing Jesus speak to him and being in his presence daily. I said, “I want that.” I started a journey toward that — an intimate friendship with Jesus. I went from being a nominal Christian to being a passionate lover of Jesus. That’s what I love people to get: Jesus is crazy about you and if you give him a chance, he’ll change your life and take you on an adventure better than you ever dreamed.
SDR: Why did you become a minister?
PH: After I met that college student, I started asking God, “Do you have a purpose for me, and what is that purpose?” You never know what day God is going to show up and speak something to you. I went to a Christmas concert at a church performing Handel’s Messiah. I was sitting there listening and I had what scripture calls a vision. My eyes were open, but I could see myself pacing back and forth on a stage. I was about 15 years older in this vision, and I was preaching the gospel and pastoring. I doubled over and started weeping because I knew at that moment that God was calling me to be a preacher and a pastor. I was honored he’d invited me into that calling.
SDR: What is the mission of your church?
PH: The vision for All Peoples is “Get rocked, get real, and give it away.” Get rocked by having an encounter with God, get real by getting into authentic community with people, and give it away by sharing the good news of Jesus in your world and around the world. Our mission statement is “Transforming lives to bless San Diego, planting churches to transform nations.” We want to fall in love with Jesus and do what he did.
SDR: Where do you go when you die?
PH: I 100-percent believe that if we call upon the name of Jesus, we will be saved. We go straight into his presence in heaven. Jesus talked about hell more than about heaven. Some people ask why God would do that. Hell was intended for Satan and his demons, but Jesus would never make someone spend eternity with him in heaven who has rejected him and doesn’t want to know him. Scripture is very clear that those who don’t commit their lives to Christ and receive the gift of salvation spend eternity in a place called hell. It’s one of the great motivating factors for telling as many people as I can about the love of Jesus and his gift of salvation. The worst of sinners, if they repent and receive the gift of Jesus and make him their Lord and savior, can be cleansed of sin and spend eternity with him in heaven and ultimately in the new heaven and the new earth.
