Comic-Con International is rolling into the San Diego Convention Center from July 24–28, and while superheroes, cosplay, and blockbuster panels get most of the spotlight, there’s another recurring theme tucked between the pages: WEED!
Cannabis culture has quietly influenced comics for decades — and more overtly since 2018, when California went rec-legal and San Diegans no longer needed a medical card to cop flower at their local dispo. From underground zines in the '70s to modern-day indie titles, the relationship between the two cultures runs deep — both championing freedom, rebellion, and a strong imagination. Some folks have said that cannabis was present in the early days of the 50-plus-year comic book show.
Nowadays, whether you're a seasoned stoner or just looking for something offbeat to thumb through after a kick-ass sesh, here are six comic books where cannabis plays a starring — or at least supporting — role.
Bluntman and Chronic
No list of weed comics is complete without this cult classic. Born from the cinematic dome of fellow weeder, actor/director/writer Kevin Smith, Bluntman and Chronic is a parody superhero title starring Jay and Silent Bob in full-on vigilante mode — if vigilantes spent more time blazing than fighting crime. Originally printed by Oni Press in the early 2000s, the comic pokes fun at the superhero genre while totally embracing our beloved canna culture. The book also exists in-universe with Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back flick. Imagine Captain America rescuing a guy who reads Captain America comic books, only there are intense gummies instead of super-serum, and epiphanies instead of explosions. Whoa.
