This little Mexican restaurant, with its wood-paneled interior and tile floors surrounding a festive courtyard, was opened nearly 80 years ago by Tony and Catalina Gonzales. Tony had just come home from military service, and at first, the restaurant — which could only seat 26 people and occupied a portion of Tony’s parents’ home — was only open on weekends. But with Catalina in the kitchen, word soon spread about the tasty chiles rellenos, turkey tacos, and zesty cheese enchiladas The restaurant expanded its hours (now it is closed only on Tuesdays) as well as its footprint. Tony Gonzales died in 1974, and Catalina in 2000. But their legacy is being honored by two daughters — and their children and grandchildren. “Jacal,” by the way, is Spanish slang for “hut” or “shack.”
