Tesla made national headlines this week after a jury ruled against the company in a fatal autopilot crash out of state. But recently, Elon Musk's electric cars have been making an impact across San Diego County as well.

Following a July 26 crash on I-15 just north of Mira Mesa, a Tesla Y driver took to Reddit, asking for witnesses or dashcam footage after a collision with a white Hino tow truck.

Prosecutors say 22-year-old Ulysses Jimenez, irate that Uribe was legally using the carpool lane, drove his Tesla at 126 mph and deliberately rammed the bike.

On July 4, Times of San Diego reported that a man driving a Ford Explorer ran a red light on Woodman Street and slammed into a recently purchased Tesla Model Y crossing Skyline Drive. The 28-year-old Tesla driver suffered a dislocated elbow, fractured ulna, and abrasions, according to San Diego police.

On July 1, Jorge Uribe, a 53-year-old Sempra Energy manager, was struck and killed while riding his motorcycle on I-805 South in Chula Vista. According to ABC 10News, prosecutors say 22-year-old Ulysses Jimenez, irate that Uribe was legally using the carpool lane, drove his Tesla at 126 mph and deliberately rammed the bike. The crash launched Uribe from his motorcycle, and he died at the scene. Jimenez has been charged with murder.

On June 22 in Bonita, 911 Video News reported that a woman crashed a Tesla into a parked Porsche in which a man and his two dogs were sleeping. Firefighters rescued the dogs, but the man was hospitalized. The Tesla driver was arrested for DUI.

In May, the 911 News guys reported that National City police arrested a Tesla driver for his third DUI after he blew a .16 and ran a red light at Highland Avenue and 8th Street, injuring another driver and launching their vehicle into the bushes by a 7-11.

619 News Media reported an April 6 crash at the I-805/State Route 54 connector in which a Tesla driver lost control, hit the center divider, and slammed into a wall. The vehicle reportedly caught fire, prompting a Good Samaritan to try to save the driver, who died at the scene.

A few days earlier, in Rancho Santa Fe, a trash truck T-boned a Tesla, trapping its driver inside. 911 Video News showed firefighters cutting the man free before he was transported to Palomar Hospital with moderate injuries.

On the morning of March 17, a Tesla dealership in Encinitas was vandalized amid a wave of protests happening across the country. According to a statement from Lt. Zheath Sanchez of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded around 5 am to the 1300 block of Encinitas Boulevard, where they discovered several Tesla vehicles and dealership windows defaced with swastikas and profanities.

Onboard security cameras on Teslas around the county have caught anti-Tesla vandals damaging the electric cars; other San Diegans, not as criminal, have left nasty notes.

In February, a man crashed his Tesla through a fence protecting the FAA building on Kearny Villa Road, according to Onscene.TV. He was reportedly speeding and possibly using his phone. A passerby used a crowbar to break the windshield and pull him from the wreckage before he was hospitalized.

On January 31, 911 Video News reported on firefighters performing a rope rescue after a Tesla plunged 30 feet down an embankment in Vista. The driver was pulled to safety and taken to the hospital.

About a week earlier, the same news outlet said a Tesla veered into a tree and burst into flames on Highland Valley Road near Potato Chip Rock. Fire crews stopped the blaze after it scorched just over a quarter of an acre. Hazmat was called in due to concerns about the EV’s battery.

Meanwhile, a $106 million Tesla battery energy storage system has just gone live in Barrio Logan.
