Blues singer Whitney Shay’s bands have included Shay & the Hustle, the Whitney Shay Quartet, the JazzKatz Orchestra, and the blues/R&B group The Shakedowns. Her album Stand Up earned a three-and-a-half-star review in Downbeat magazine and topped Billboard’s Blues chart. She took home trophies for Best Blues Album and Artist of the Year at the 2019 San Diego Music Awards, as well as winning Best Blues Album at the 2021 SDMAs.
Nickel Creek is an acoustic music trio with roots in bluegrass, which the trio now describes as “progressive acoustic.” This past March, the trio released Celebrants, their fifth studio album and their first new full-length in nine years. The bill includes Chicago-born, Wisconsin-raised Monica Martin, who formerly fronted the Baraboo alt-folk band PHOX.
Formed in 2015, the Brian Jones Rock ‘N’ Roll Revival has recorded original music, as well as staging themed tribute sets focusing on specific topics, events, bands, and album releases. This Imperial Beach set will feature songs from The Rolling Stones’ 1969 live album Get Your Ya-Yas Out, along with deep blues tracks.
Singer-guitarist Mark Fisher is a vet of local jam bands such as Fish & the Seaweeds and The Electric Waste Band. His weekly Mission Beach High Noon Dead Set event is an outdoor, pet-friendly party paying tribute to the Grateful Dead and featuring other local jam band players from acts such as The Travel Agents, etc.
Bluesman Earl Thomas started singing professionally in 1987, with the local blues/R&B band Rhumboogies, blending 1950s Chicago, Texas and West Coast blues styles. His band Kings of Rhythm frequently performs tributes to the late North County musician Ike Turner, and his group The Blues Ambassadors is known for the classic “I’m Broken Hearted.” This Solana Beach performance includes backup courtesy of Sister Leola and The Gospel Ambassadors.
