Maverick’s Middle

Top Gun sequel filming in Coronado before heading into the desert

“Let’s do this!” A lumpy but still fit Tom Cruise (Maverick) urges fellow returning stars Anthony Edwards (Goose), Rick Rossovich (Slider), and Val Kilmer (Iceman) to recapture the energy and excitement of their famous beach volleyball game from 1986. (See below.) “Tony, I know you didn’t take your shirt off last time, but at least lose the jacket! Rick, you look even better than I do from the neck down, but the brillo-hair and bathing costume aren’t going to help us with the 18-24 demo, and probably not any other demo, either. Val…let’s talk.” Filming of the scene had to be shut down after Edwards protested that his character died in the original, but resumed when Cruise reminded him that nothing is ever truly dead while it is still profitable.

Coronado fans of Tom Cruise and ‘80s blockbusters got a big thrill last week as Tom was spotted cruising around town on a motorcycle while filming scenes for Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the hit movie about elite Navy flyboys that made San Diego the movie destination it is today. Unfortunately, Tom’s stay was a short one, as most of the film will be set in the desert outside Las Vegas, where Maverick has made a reputation as the best damn drone pilot around, but one who still plays by his own rules.

Kenny Loggins, whose song “Danger Zone” became a huge hit thanks to its inclusion on the film’s soundtrack, has confirmed that he will be releasing a new version of the song under the revised title “Laser Drone.” “It still sounds cool, because of the lasers,” said Loggins, “but at the same time, it acknowledges the way that war has changed since 1986 — and also, the way Maverick and company have changed.” He then granted SD on the QTa sneak peek at the new version’s opening: Sittin’ in a trailer, out on the Nevada Line/ Pull an extra shift, they’ll have to pay you overtime/ Unmanned aircraft, Laser Drone/ Joystick jockey, Laser Drone…
