Com Truise is the electronic project of Seth Haley, a former DJ who employs an arsenal of synth patches and drum machines to create a heady mix of ’80s-inspired sci-fi music. By pitch-bending and layering these plugins, Haley creates something that is futuristic and retro-sounding.
Silicon Tare is ostensibly themed around a space traveler (a story that began with the first Com Truise record, Galactic Melt), but you’d be hard pressed to detect any narrative given the absence of vocals.
Second track “Forgive” is an early highlight, a fascinating mix of interlocking synths and stuttering rhythms with a dazzling breakdown. Things are slowed down on side two but are no less engaging; the title track gets out there with some spacy synth sounds and an unexpected mid-song redirection, while final song “du Zirconia” builds to an ecstatic climax before gently fading out. Seth Haley is an artist of his time — someone who has no apparent musical training but who is able to exploit modern tools to create something special. With Silicon Tare, he’s taken the electronic-music art form to an intriguing place.
