Musical fountain of eggnog from the San Diego Symphony

Clearly December is here

Eggnog.
Eggnog.

The weekend of musical eggnog begins with a screening of Home Alone at Symphony Hall. The San Diego Symphony will provide a live soundtrack to this modern holiday classic. What will that rapscallion Kevin do to fight of the holiday crooks? Mainly just run around and be cute but, hey, it’s the holidays so why not have an eight-year-old defeat two middle-aged ex-cons in a series of Road Runner-esque escapades? Friday, December 2, 8 p.m.

Saturday has a Messiah sing-along at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Banker’s Hill. Singers can bring their score of Handel’s masterpiece and sing alongside the San Diego Master Chorale. The concert will be conducted by Master Chorale director John Russell and accompanied by St. Paul’s mighty Quimby organ. This is a ticketed event. Saturday, December 3, 2 p.m.

Things get real on Sunday. There is another Messiah sing-along at the University of San Diego. This one is also ticketed but features an orchestra. The event is at Founder’s Hall on the USD campus. Sunday, December 4, 2 p.m.

A sit and listen Messiah is being performed by Point Loma Nazarene University on Sunday evening. This version includes a freewill offering, student soloists, and a community chorus. It will be held in Brown Chapel on the PLNU campus. Sunday, December 4, 3 p.m.

First United Methodist Church of San Diego is presenting a triumvirate of contemporary Christmas pieces by John Rutter (Gloria), Kevin Memley (Magnificat), and Ron Nelson (The Christmas Story). The concert will be held in the Sanctuary on the church campus. Sunday, December 4, 7 p.m.

There you have it. The first weekend of December.
