She hailed a cab, they hailed the rocks

Tijuana taxi incident results in injuries and burning car

Drivers of yellow taxis situated near the international border in Tijuana attacked the driver of a competing taxi libre on Tuesday, October 27, then set his cab ablaze, according to an account published by El Mexicano, a Baja California daily.

Also injured in the 9:30 p.m. incident was a female passenger, who suffered cuts to her face, back, and left arm, the newspaper reported.

The attack occurred not far from the pedestrian crossing from Mexico to the U.S. in the Colonia Empleados Federales neighborhood when the woman hailed the taxi libre near a yellow cab taxi stand, according to El Mexicano.

Once the woman got into the taxi libre, yellow cab drivers began throwing rocks at their competitor, breaking the windows and injuring the passenger, said El Mexicano's account.

The attackers then set the taxi libre on fire, which required a tanker unit from the Tijuana fire department to put the blaze out, according to the story.

The woman passenger, identified only as “Vanessa,” was able to point out to police officers responding to the altercation one of the yellow cab drivers involved in the attack, El Mexicano reported. Though other yellow-cab drivers participated, most of them fled the scene before officers arrived.

Arrested was Daniel Andrés del Valle, 33, who was later turned over to state prosecutors for further investigation and a determination of what charges might be filed against him, the newspaper reported.
