That's one nasty rash, Clairemont

Door-to-door thieves and would-bes use the lost-dog ploy

Wednesday afternoon (June 17), several homes were broken into or targeted in the Clairemont area. Emma Erlich of West Clairemont warned her neighbors on NextDoor.com that two teenagers hid in their bedroom on Mt. Carol Drive while two to three black male teenagers (15–18 years of age) broke into the home after ringing the doorbell.

Another West Clairemont neighbor, Deb Dziewit, spoke to the police officers on the scene and was informed that the teenagers were targeting homes by ringing the doorbell first to see if anyone was home. If someone answers the door, they say they are looking for their lost dog before moving on to the next home.

San Diego police officer Larry Hesselgesser confirmed on June 19 that two to three black teenagers were seen knocking on several doors shortly before the burglary happened. One of the males was seen in a 2000-2005 black Chevy Impala.

"As a reminder,” said Hesselgesser, “if you or your family are home during the day and you hear somebody knocking on your door, it is a good idea to let them know you are home by yelling through the door ‘Who is it?' or 'We are not interested.'"

Shortly before the above incident, Kristen Sebring of East Clairemont shared with her neighbors via NextDoor.com that approximately nine homes on Mt. Albertine were broken into or targeted. She reported that one of her neighbors heard his doorbell ring but didn't answer it. A few minutes later a rock came crashing through his sliding glass door. He yelled at a man who took off on foot, jumping a fence to escape. Police were called and arrived on the scene 30 minutes later, around 2:00 p.m. The victim described the suspect as a short Hispanic male of unknown age wearing white pants and a white shirt with a blue collar.

A week ago, officer Holly Tafoya released a photo of a suspect involved in a residential burglary on the 4800 block of Mt. Etna Drive in East Clairemont. The police describe the suspect as a Hispanic male, 35–45 years of age, 5'7" to 5'9", shaven head and unshaven facial hair. It was reported to the police by neighbors that the suspect got into a green Honda Civic, which turned out to be stolen and was ditched around the block at Mt. Frissell. He was witnessed getting into a newer silver Honda Accord with tinted windows and no front plate. His companion was described as a shorter thin white male, 30 years old, with a shaved head.

Within the past month, there have been other incidents in the Clairemont area, including several neighbors having their recycling stolen from backyards, packages stolen off porches, a rise in bicycle theft, and several homes have had their outdoor solar lights stolen.

Neighbors with any information are urged to call Detective Quintos at 858-552-1735.
