Honest to Pete, there are days when even I get tired of bitching and moaning, but living in a culturally deprived cow town where art is measured by the number of costumed mental patients who pass through the gates of Con leaves me no other course of action.

Duran Duran: Unstaged Trailer

Directing your attention to Exhibit A, Duran Duran: Unstaged, the first feature David “Second Only to Scorsese” Lynch has signed since Inland Empire (2006). Unlike IE, which never opened in San Diego, DD:E will get at least one commercial showing.

Had I not been searching out a showtime at the Gaslamp, chances are news of David Lynch’s latest would not have hit my radar until after the fact.

Duran Duran: Unstaged

I know what you’re thinking: Duran Duran? They’re going to need to pass out nasal masks and cylindrical tanks filled with what Blue Velvet’s Frank Booth was inhaling in order to get through this. If David Lynch can make forge a masterwork out of an old guy taking a trip on a tractor, a concert doc about a crush band once worshipped by throngs of teenage girls should be a breeze.

Duran Duran: Unstaged screens one night only, Wednesday, September 10, at 7:30 pm. There are four screening venues to choose from: UltraStar’s Hazard Center and Poway 10 and Reading Cinemas’ Town Square and Gaslamp 15.

Great Scott, Scott, can't you tell us something more about movies than how to catch a David Lynch film that's showing for one night on four screens and only at 7:30? And also, missing Comic Con? Please.

If it's a dry spell for films -- which it is -- you could tap your fund of erudition and name movies the common man could find and might enjoy from Kensington Video or from Netflix. You could list 'em according to personal prejudice, genre, theme, director, actor, animation, color, national origin -- whatever. You could tell us why you liked your recommendation. You could even add the "Duran Duran" information.

But like the three-star review here last week of that truly horrible documentary about transient poor people in rural Missouri -- which closed by the time the review ran -- this is just not enough to live on.

A new film by David Lynch is cause for celebration. You gon'na be at Town Square or the Gaslamp, Mon? The corn's on me! Be careful what you ask for. I'm putting the finishing touches on a review of "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" – available at Kensington Video and that other outlet you mention – that'll knock your socks off. I expect a heap of thanks in tomorrow's comments section. And I didn't miss anything, Mon. When it comes to that event, all I see is the Con.

Your best friend is you. I'm my best friend, too. We share the same views and hardly ever argue. Eat Spam from a can, watch late night C-span, rock out to old-school Duran Duran...

Don't tell me I'm going to see Dave Rice at the Gaslamp this Weds. night?!

Obviously, your depression has lifted. You are a funny guy and we appreciate that.
