Big Ben

Democratic San Diego city councilman Ben Hueso seems to be on a power roll. Not only has he been elected by his colleagues as city council president, on February 12, he filed a statement declaring his intention to run in two years for the 79th Assembly District seat held by Democrat Mary Salas — who in turn is expected to run for the state Senate seat being vacated by Denise Ducheny. But insiders say it wouldn’t be a cakewalk: Chula Vista Democrats have vowed to mount a challenge. … Something may be up at San Diego Kind Corporation, the nonprofit subsidized-housing operation run by Mavourneen O’Connor, twin sister of ex–San Diego mayor Maureen O’Connor. Last February, Kind’s chief operations officer Marilynn Hardebeck, Maureen’s longtime crony and political strategist during her days at city hall, died at age 79. Two years earlier, Kind shopped around its downtown San Diego Square apartment tower but decided not to sell. Now one O’Connor watcher says the building may soon be on the block again. Mavourneen has drawn a $33,854 salary from Kind, according to IRS records. And Sheila O’Connor, another sister, has been paid $59,295 as San Diego Square’s “resident relations manager.”
