An off-duty Tijuana police officer, allegedly driving his green Jeep Cherokee while under the influence of alcohol and speeding, struck and killed a 37-year-old woman selling newspapers on a street corner on Monday, February 23, the city’s secretary of public safety said.
At about 8:15 a.m., near the intersection of Díaz Ordaz and Simón Bolívar boulevards , 37-year-old Norma Elizabeth Rodríguez Carrera was selling newspapers when police officer Fernando Vega Cruz, 30, lost control of his vehicle while rounding the corner. The Jeep jumped the curb and hit Rodríguez. Investigators reported that Vega appeared to be drunk. They said his Jeep also struck a parked tow truck.
According to the secretary of public safety, Officer Vega was assigned to the investigative unit of the Cerro Colorado precinct. He was taken to a hospital for examination, then turned over to the district attorney.
