The year was 1983, and as always on a Saturday morning, my best friend and I get into my mom’s van and head downtown to the local roller-skating rink. I couldn’t tell you the exact date, but I can tell you that as soon as “Atomic Dog” by George Clinton came on, life on the roller-skating rink became a little bit more fun. That was such a great song to skate to. And I did skate to it for weeks.
Now, fast-forward to 1993, and I’m working my first radio job in Salinas-Monterey, and we are doing a bus trip to San Carlos to see George Clinton at the Circle Star Theater. When I found out about this, I told our promotions director I have to be there and I was. I can’t tell you how I did it, but I did get backstage and for the first time in my life I was star-struck.
I was standing at the side of the stage, and it was probably an hour before the show when at the corner of my eye I see George Clinton coming my way. I was frozen and wanted to say so much but couldn’t. He looked at me and said hi and walked away. I couldn’t move and regret to this day I wasn’t able to talk or move. At least I have that memory.
