Best of 2001: Best Children's Bookstore

The Prince and the Pauper
3201 Adams Avenue, Normal Heights
619-283-4380 or 800-454-3726
www.oldkidsbooks.com

People remember the books they read as kids: Little Golden Books, Dick and Jane, Mercer Mayer, Maurice Sendak, Uncle Wiggly, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer (illustrated by Norman Rockwell), Robert Louis Stevenson, the Oz books, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Frog and Toad, Dr. Seuss, Hans Christian Andersen, the Little House series, Tom Swift, books from Parents' Magazine Press, and on and on and on. When the desire to pass along something of yourself to your children (or, perhaps, simple nostalgia) hits you square in the heart, your mind will summon up these remembered treasures, but your hands may have trouble grasping them. Lucky you: San Diego is home to a large collection of vintage children's books -- more than 60,000 volumes, only 10,000 of which are current titles. Owner Jack Hastings has been collecting and researching since 1988 and is just getting started.
