Dear Matthew:
1. Where does Mikhail Gorbachev live now? Russia or the U.S.? 2. What happened to Jeffrey Dahmer's killer?
-- Curious of North Park
If you want to drop him a note, Mikhail can be reached c/o The Gorbachev Foundation for International Peace, Leningrad Prospekt, Moscow. It's his private think-tank. There's a branch in the U.S.
But all things considered, Christopher Scarver might have more time to correspond. He's the guy who beat Dahmer and another inmate to death in a Wisconsin prison in 1994. Scarver claims a particularly close connection to God; and it was God who gave him the idea of getting rid of Dahmer, he says. Luckily, Scarver was in the gym when the message arrived, so he grabbed a metal bar from the weight pile and tracked down Dahmer and Jesse Anderson cleaning a bathroom. Scarver was already serving a life sentence for killing a store clerk in a robbery. (Victim Anderson was serving a life sentence for killing his wife.) After the dust cleared, Scarver was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 30 years. Basically, all he lost was a chance for parole in 50 years, which was part of his pre-Dahmer life sentence. Not long after, four prison guards were disciplined for leaving Dahmer, Anderson, and Scarver unsupervised. Most people figure it was no coincidence that the four suddenly got busy with other things. Dahmer was reportedly a target from the day he arrived in prison.
