Sounds more interesting in summary than it looks on screen, where it suffers from a formal tidiness and rigidity not uncharacteristic of Chinese imports. The worthy-of-Buñuel perversities -- the tragicomic demise of a groom on his wedding day, the bride's coerced pledge of fidelity to her fiancé's carved effigy, the broken ankles to enforce her pledge -- take up too little screen time in relation to the commonplace impossible romance with a social underling.
