Innocuous little nothing about a missing cat and the motley Parisians who take part in the search. Filmmaker Cedric Klapisch harks back in several respects to the original (the one and the only) French New Wave: a shoot-from-the-hip, improvisatory, almost diaristic approach to his material; a cast filled out with nonprofessionals; loud Godardian pop color (in an unfortunately dull muted un-Coutardian image). And newcomer Garance Clavel as the forlorn cat-owner evokes some of the pensive pouty gravity ("It is a big deal. For me it's a big deal") of such New Wave sirens as Bernadette Lafont and Marie Laforet. The overall effect might be more ingratiating if it tried less hard to be. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
