Another art-house food movie: Turkey Day in the L.A. melting pot, a celebration of (you guessed it) diversity. African-American, Jewish, Chicano, Vietnamese, young, old, lesbian, vegetarian, dachshund, whatever. Good strong work from Alfre Woodard (as usual), Mercedes Ruehl (ditto), Maury Chaykin ("You know Michael Landon from Bonanza? He was Jewish. The whole Cartwright family was Jewish"), in particular. Liberally sprinkled with amusing and agreeable little moments -- roughly the size of the one, for instance, when the stereotyped Jewish Mother positions mini-marshmallows atop the sweet potatoes. But on the whole, overly contrived and calculating, unctuously diplomatic and namby-pamby. With Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Kyra Sedgwick, Lainie Kazan, Dennis Haysbert; directed by Gurinder Chadha. (2000) — Duncan Shepherd
