A romantic-comic meditation on adultness and immaturity, Nice Guy and Asshole. The former identifies himself by saying stuff like "I want to be open with you. I need to feel I'm being straight with you." The other does stuff like palming off a $1700 engagement ring as an $11,000 one: the best ring-shopping scene since Lords of Flatbush. First-time director and writer Tom Flynn, who might just be trying to score points with women, expresses all the right attitudes but in a trained-parrot sort of way, ingratiating but superficial. And he does seem to know a thing or two about the m.o. of assholes. Well-acted by Peter Gallagher, Jon Tenney, Suzy Amis (especially her), John C. McGinley (not so much him), Cynthia Stevenson, Lili Taylor, and Tom Sizemore. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
