Zalman King, as one of the co-writers of 9 1/2 Weeks, expressed some disappointment over the finished product. Now as both the writer and the director of Two Moon Junction, another tale of obsessional passion, he has the chance to show us what was intended. Apparently it was a matter of fine tuning rather than of a major overhaul. He can hardly have had any objection to the vogueries of Adrian Lyne's visual style, for there are plenty of those same shafts of blue light on display here, and veils of white light, and lots and lots of ecliptic backlighting -- not usually so much of it that you can't make out what's happening, but often enough to give you some trouble. But there is also just that little extra oomph of boldness, as perhaps exemplified in the small, miniskirted role of Kristy McNichol, who continues her maturation process by taking off her top and speaking lines like: "Did that son of a bitch make you take an AIDS test before he fucked you?" Plainly the best thing for the viewer to do, not counting craven tactics like leaving early or falling asleep, is to sit back and laugh. Easier said than done, though. With Sherilynn Fenn, Richard Tyson, and Louise Fletcher. (1988) — Duncan Shepherd
