An unexplained power outage, over a vast area and an extended time, chips away at the thin veneer of civilization. (The opening scene offers a glimpse of chaos of special interest to the concerned moviegoer, an accurate depiction of the problem of people gabbing in theaters: "Hey, I got a truck just like that!") Serious-minded thriller, even somewhat homiletic; modest in scale, deliberate in pace; and involving in spite of the central trio's insistence on making things difficult for themselves. With Kyle MacLachlan, Elisabeth Shue, Dermot Mulroney, Richard T. Jones, Michael Rooker; written and directed by David Koepp. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
