The image of rural American landscapes and buildings — plain, flat, hard-edged, like Keaton's face — provides a solid, sober backdrop to the misadventures of a Confederate Army reject who rescues a hijacked train from a Union raiding party. It's one of the funnier Keaton comedies, but you still might feel that applause, rather than laughter, is more often the appropriate response to Keaton's athletic triumphs over unending obstacles.
