What could be more logical in the Nineties than a movie based on a video game? As a matter of fact, what took so long? (The "Trust the fungus" catch phrase is a clear emulation of Star Wars's "May the Force be with you.") Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, two Brooklyn plumbers, tumble into a parallel dimension where the human species is descended from dinosaurs, not apes, and is ruled by an "evil egg-sucking son of a snake" named King Koopa. The result is an exercise in forced whimsy, and an assemblage of hairstyles, costumes, and special effects of Godforsaken ugliness. Bob Hoskins, John Leguizano, Samantha Mathis, Dennis Hopper; directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
