It's the seventh game of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Pittsburgh vs. Chicago (no, it's not science fiction, exactly), and the Vice President and his party have been taken hostage in the luxury box by a stereotypically smart-aleck arch villain ("What do I want? World peace, an end to bigotry, and no more mini-malls"). One of the hostages, however, happens to be the daughter of the Fire Marshal, a man named McCord, a name which naturally would make any film producer think of Jean-Claude van Damme. "This guy could prove to be a pain in the ass," prophesies the bad guy. "He has heroic tendencies." One amusing spectacle when van Damme squares off against an Amazon disguised as the Penguin mascot, Mr. Iceburgh; and a couple of hair-raising spectacles after the domed roof of the arena is cracked open -- but the moviemakers haven't conquered the question of how to be amusing or hair-raising and remotely plausible at the same time. With Powers Boothe, Whittni Wright, Ross Malinger, Dorian Harewood; directed and photographed by Peter Hyams. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
