Unassuming little musical, well-proportioned and well-crafted, about a tacky tap class that gets invited to take part in a big fundraiser for Save the Children. In essence: "Let's put on a show!" The bonus production number at the curtain was a gross mistake; and it was a mistake of some size, even if it was the only way to get the movie financed, to have Liza Minnelli in the lead role. (She's kept pretty well under control, as is, even more so, Shelley Winters as her sourpuss piano player.) But the small delights of character and performance are many. Those of Sheila McCarthy alone, as a lank-haired battered housewife, amount to many. And those of Julie Walters as a garishly garbed neat freak transplanted from England do not lag far behind. Ellen Greene, Andrea Martin, Robyn Stevan, Bill Irwin; directed by Lewis Gilbert. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
