The Frankenstein story transplanted to the Naval Air Force of "the near future," where a UCAV by the name of EDI (for us civilians, that's an Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle by the name of Extreme Deep Invader) goes "completely haywire" and, in a voice as tranquilized as that of HAL in 2001, politely disobeys any order but his own. It falls to three top-gun humans -- a piercingly blue-eyed daredevil as disobedient as EDI, a hard-bodied babe, and an expendable African-American whose namesake is the English Baroque composer, Henry Purcell -- to bring EDI back or bring EDI down. (The mad scientist would be an apple-munching Navy officer who rushes too fast into the future.) The aerial action is cartoonish in both conception and execution. But the biggest laughs, unsolicited, go to Jessica Biel on the ground in North Korea, with a pack of Commie sharpshooters hot on her heels. Josh Lucas, Jamie Foxx, Sam Shepard; directed by Rob Cohen. (2005) — Duncan Shepherd
