Independent filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is here more independent than ever (writer, director, director of photography, and lead actor in a dual role, or treble role if you count the pre- and post-film host: "You will need to see the picture again and again until you understand everything"), revealing an unsuspected antic side to his personality, exploring modern Angst, or anomie, or something, in an antiquated experimental style of screwball surrealism -- steadily inventive, fitfully amusing, never as exhausting or boring as you might anticipate. A minor work, self-indulgent on a modest scale, rather rough-hewn (plenty of microphones dipping into view); but anyone with an interest in Soderbergh will be interested. And even maybe someone previously with no interest. Betsy Brantley, David Jensen, Eddie Jemison. (1997) — Duncan Shepherd
