A homicide cop, and ex-seminarian, on a tailor-made case: the corpse is an eyeless hermaphrodite tattooed with the ancient Hebraic symbol of the angel Uziel, and among his effects is a 2nd-century Bible containing a previously suppressed chapter. "Are you saying we have an angel on ice?" Exactly. Renewed warfare in Heaven has spilled over to solid Earth. The movie is intriguingly oblique about what's going on, and eventually irritatingly so. And the lofty tone is lowered by campy portrayals of Gabriel-Gone-Bad (Christopher Walken) and Lucifer Himself (Viggo Mortensen). Upholding the tone to some degree are the fey tristesse of the Good Angel (Eric Stoltz) and the tortured soulfulness of the Mere Human (Elias Koteas). With Virginia Madsen, Amanda Plummer, and Moriah Shining Dove Snyder; written and directed by Gregory Widen. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
