A pampered American couple with a serious cash-flow problem consider liquidating their best asset: a salt-shaker-sized Henry Moore bronze. But first it gets stolen from their London hotel room by a deaf chambermaid who covets it purely for aesthetics: a touch of schmaltz in a frostily "sophisticated" comedy. There is also an occasional touch of wit: the hotel manager resists hiring the deaf girl on the excuse of potential communication difficulties with her peers, most of whom turn out not even to speak English. But there is very small pleasure in watching a pair of selfish and shallow people behaving badly. Especially because they're played by John Malkovich and Andie MacDowell, who give small pleasure behaving any which way. And because they land on their feet in the end.
