Seriously depressing documentary about the corruption of the flesh, among other things, as embodied in the commercial model, dilettante actress, rock singer, and drug addict, Nico (née Christa Päffgen), who peaked in the Sixties and died of a brain hemorrhage in 1986. Among the interviewees: the film director Nico Papatakis (from whom Nico got her name), Alain Delon's mother (and grandmother of Nico's illegitimate son: when she opted to help raise the child, she was disowned by her own), fellow Warhol "superstar" Viva, Warhol Factory co-worker Paul Morrissey, Velvet Underground co-member John Cale (but not Lou Reed), Jackson Browne, Tina Aumont, and finally her son, Ari, whom she introduced to heroin. Clip sources include Jacques Poitrenaud's Striptease, Fellini's La Dolce Vita, Warhol's Chelsea Girls. It takes you back, and it takes you down. Directed by Susanne Ofteringer. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
