On an out-of-the-way Aegean island an unaggressive unit of Italian sailors uneventfully waits out the reign of Mussolini. They play soccer, they smoke dope, they skinny-dip with the sultry goatherdess (normally dressed in a Flashdance-style off-the-shoulder sweater), they visit the local putana (one of them eventually making an honest woman of her), and three of them reunite in a maudlin coda in the present day. The whole affair is a slightly more realistic, more circumstantial, more philosophical, therefore more objectionable, version of an Old Milwaukee TV advertisement featuring the Swedish Bikini Team. And roughly a hundred and ninety times longer. With Diego Abatantuono and Giuseppe Cederna; directed by Gabriele Salvatores. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
