Soft-boiled thriller about an alcohol-impaired bodyguard (Denzel Washington) who goes on a revenge rampage after his button-cute charge (Dakota Fanning) gets snatched by a Mexico City kidnapping ring. Long and lugubrious, the movie sets aside a full hour for the guard to bond with the body, dropping his defenses under her peppering of personal questions, helping her with her homework, treating her to ice cream, and most significantly, perhaps even self-consciously symbolically, pulling double duty as her swimming coach: she's slow off the blocks, like the movie itself. Things hardly pick up once the murder and the mayhem start: Tony Scott's jiggly, jumpy, jerky visuals propel the action sideways rather than forwards. Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell, Marc Anthony, Giancarlo Giannini, Rachel Ticotin. (2004) — Duncan Shepherd
