Kevin Smith, while keeping the one-day duration of Clerks, has expanded his scope from convenience store to shopping mall, and has expanded his target audience from select art houses to major-chain multiplexes. Some of the details remain "esoteric" (i.e., some of the language and allusions remain encrypted), but the thing overall is depressingly conformist, complacent, lazy. Which is to say that the filmmaker identifies himself closely with his slacker heroes (he plays the part of one of them, in fact), and is interested only in congratulations all around. Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Michael Rooker, and (as a topless fortune teller with a stick-on third nipple) Priscilla Barnes. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
