A thriller, of a sort, submerged unthrillingly in a swamp of history, Faustian mythology, religion, zoology. An undercover Hungarian cop, assigned to shadow an imperilled Russian chess master, is armed with seven magic bullets from the Devil, each of them pre-programmed to hit its mark, excepting the seventh, whose target is the Devil's preference. There are palpable touches of magic, even in normal, everyday moments: a small girl tiptoeing across the rug in her bare feet; a flock of sheep moving liquidly over a hillside. Touches of magic, sure; but no sustained narrative enchantment. Gary Kemp, Sadie Frost, Alexander Kaidanovsky; directed by Ildiko Enyedi. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
