Cute-kid comedy. Number-one cutie is Christina Vidal, a Brooklyn pickpocket who, after getting discovered by (i.e., picking the pocket of) a talent scout on a street corner, becomes the Sunburst Cookie girl. Michael J. Fox counts as a cutie too, a former child actor who hasn't quit acting cute just because he is now an adult and runs a third-rate children's talent agency. And then there are the various howling-dog, fingernails-on-blackboard auditioners at the agency. All in all, too much cute. There is also, not incompatible with cuteness, some of same affection for the fringes of show business expressed in Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose. With Nathan Lane, Cyndi Lauper; directed by James Lapine. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
