There is enough handwritten communication exchanged in Shunji Iwai’s deceptively uncomplicated romance to fill a small post office branch. And no junk mail! This archly romantic drama based on memory and mistaken identity opens, fittingly enough, at a funeral followed immediately by a high school reunion. Zhihua (Zhou Xun), unable to tell the crowd of her sister's passing, effectively impersonates her sibling much to the disbelief of former classmate (and unrequited love) Qin (Chuan Yin). Iwai effortlessly illustrates his devotion to secondary characters and the importance of assigning each member of his supporting cast more than one unique bit of business to carry them through the story. For all its talk of love, Last Letter is a romantic drama void of romance. At no point in the film, not even in the flashbacks, is there any display of romantic attachment on the parts of the characters. (2018) — Scott Marks
