Echo In the Canyon movie poster

Newcomer Andrew Slater is credited with directing and co-writing what is ostensibly a documentary tribute to the influential Laurel Canyon music scene of the ‘60s. Alas, this is as much a Jakob Dylan vanity project as it is a documentary. Jakob hosts! Jakob sings! Jakob produces! Be it a soft focus reverse angle elbow poking in frame right, the back of his head, or one of the multitudinous cutaways to our non-emotive emcee nodding in agreement — the first hundred patrons should receive a commemorative Jakob Dylan bobblehead — the singer hogs more screen time than Milton Berle in It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. (At least Bob had the perspicacity to hire Scorsese.) Never at a loss for words, sublime self-proclaimed a’hole David Crosby has insight to spare, and damn if John Sebastian still doesn’t come across as the happiest guy on earth. The curious can learn more from watching YouTube accounts of the era than from sitting through this. 2019.
