This documentary escapee from the Food Network follows 15-year-old Flynn McGarry, dubbed “the Justin Bieber of food,” as he transitions from kid cuisinier to celebrity chef. Did I say documentary? Half the picture consists of home movies shot by his suffocatingly predatorial mother, Meg. Day and night she films, the camera placed so far up the boy’s ass, the poor kid has to cough whenever mom needs to take a light reading. You’ve heard the term stage mother? Meg is a kitchen mother whose own identity is rapidly being eclipsed by her son’s. I kept wanting the kid to toss back his red Conan O’Brien wave and — in his best James Dean — belt her with, “You’re tearing me apart!” Cameron Yates receives director’s credit for following in mom’s “shoot now, figure it out later” footsteps. 2018.
