The Birthday Party
Stanley doesn't seem like much. His clothes look slept in, his stories -- about being a concert pianist -- may or may not be true. No matter. "They" are out to get him in Harold Pinter's famous "comedy of menace." And bring him back into the fold, even if it means shearing his brain. New Fortune Theatre Company's opening night had some spotty moments (it got the menace down pat, but could have played up the comedy), but stellar performances by Dana Hooley (as sweet and randy Meg, landlady of a seaside boarding house) and Richard Baird (as McCann a time-bomb with a conscience) riveted throughout, and Max Macke's Stanley fought a humble battle against impossible odds. Critic's Pick.
