Laughter on the 23rd Floor
When he was just breaking in as a writer, in the early 1950s Neil Simon worked on Sid Caesar's Show of Shows with the Dream Team of comedy, including Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. Laughter recalls those years and the mad frenzy of so many creative minds in a single room. The play isn't up to Simon's well-made standards (more bits and sketches than a whole). But led by David Ellenstein's vein-bulging portrayal of the mega-neurotic Sid Caeser, the North Coast Rep's tight ensemble cast mines it for humor and occasional pathos. Worth a try.
